The Clai Brombonero is certainly one of the finest organic red wines of Istria and an outstanding example of winemaking artistry by the mastermind Giorgio Clai. This high-end wine, crafted from the Refosk grape, presents itself in an intense, dark red to black tone. Its complexity and depth are owed to the dark Refosco grape and its four-week maceration period with spontaneous fermentation on natural yeasts, followed by over two years of aging in large wooden barrels.

On the palate, the Brombonero unfolds an impressive array of flavors of dark fruits and tobacco notes. The texture is rich and dense, lending the wine an exceptional mouthfeel. Despite its robust body and high alcohol content of 15.5%, the wine remains balanced and elegant. The long, lingering finish leaves a lasting impression and invites one to enjoy the wine leisurely and explore its complexity.

1/13/2024 - THEGREEN1985 LIKES THIS WINE: 94 points Croatian red wine from Istria:
Refošk. 15,5 % alcohol. Macerated in large wooden barrels for about one month on natural yeast. Aged for at least two years in big oak barrels (1000 to 2500 l).
Consumed over two days. Dark red/black color. Very powerful and ripe aromas of nutmeg, dark fruit, vanilla, blueberries, marker pen, tobacco and licorice. Very powerful flavors of dark fruit, blackberries, vanilla, nutmeg, mint and licorice.
Dry. Medium body. Medium acidity. Silky tannins. Excellent balance. Very good structure. Some complexity. Very powerful. Pure. Long finish with blackberries and nutmeg.
Day one: A very powerful red wine, outstanding in that aspect. Surprisingly ripe, so much so that I’m skeptical about the potential for long term aging and worried that the planned aeration will be too much. Intensity, concentration and complexity could be better. At this point I hold Ottocento 2016 much higher, a much more complete wine. 93/100
Day two (aerated in bottle, mid-low shoulder level, for 24 hours): A more harmonious wine today, elegant and powerful. It continues to improve during the evening. Excellent with cheese. I now see a potential for aging. A very memorable and quite unique wine. At this stage I hold Ottocento 2016 as the better wine and Brombonero 2018 as the greater wine. 94/100

The Clai Brombonero is a versatile companion for upscale occasions. Its richness and complexity make it the ideal partner for game, lamb, grilled steak, and other hearty meat dishes. Additionally, its diversity of flavors pairs excellently with vegetarian dishes, especially those with intense spices. Served at a temperature of around 19°C, it unfolds its full range of flavors. A large wine glass (e.g., Burgundy by Zalto) allows capturing the complex nose of this wine fully. Ideal for special evenings where wine and food take center stage and time is taken to observe its development in the glass.

The Clai Brombonero shows an impressive aging potential of at least 15 years. For optimal aging, it should be stored in a slightly cooler, dark place. The minimal sulfur dosage and unfiltered bottling underscore the natural character of this wine. Decanting before consumption is recommended to unleash the wine's full potential and remove any sediment.

Clai: Where Istria's Heart Touches the Wine

The Clai Winery, idyllically situated in the heart of Istria, is a true gem of organic winemaking. Under the former leadership of Giorgio Clai, a winemaker with vision and passion, the winery has become synonymous with quality and authenticity. Spanning an area of 10 hectares of vineyards and 5 hectares of olive groves, nestled in the picturesque landscape around the village of Krasica, south of Buje, the vines and olive trees thrive under ideal conditions.

The proximity to the Adriatic Sea and an elevation of about 200 meters ensure a perfect microclimate where the grapes can fully express their aroma. Clai's terroir is characterized by calcareous flysch soil, known for its low fertility and good drainage. These conditions put the vines under natural stress, leading to the production of grapes of the highest quality.

The Clai Winery and its team place great emphasis on organic farming and completely abstain from systemic treatments such as herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides. Fertilization is done sparingly and exclusively with organic material. Winemaking at Clai follows a natural approach. Grapes are spontaneously fermented on the skins, without the addition of enzymes, selected yeasts, or lactic acid bacteria. The wines mature in barrels of various sizes and spend a long time on the lees, imparting complexity and depth. After nearly two years of aging, the wines are bottled without micro or sterile filtration to preserve their natural purity and the character of the terroir.
